In a historic announcement on Tuesday (September 17), the International Cricket Council (ICC) said that the prize money for the women's T20 World Cup 2024 will be the same as that given to the men's winners earlier in the year. At the ICC's annual summit in July, a decision was made.

The winners of the tournament, to be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will receive USD 2.34 million, making it a massive 134 percent increase on the USD1 million granted to Australia after they won their sixth title in South Africa in 2023. Likewise, the runners-up will now bag USD 1.17 million, an increase of 134 percent in comparison to the USD 500,000 South Africa won for reaching their maiden final, at home.

The two losing semi-finalists will now each earn USD 675,000 (up from USD 210,000 in 2023), with the overall prize pot totaling USD 7,958,080 - a jump of 225 percent from the last edition's total of USD 2.45 million. This makes the ninth edition of the Women's T20 World Cup the first event in ICC history to achieve prize money equity, nearly seven years ahead of the governing body's original schedule of 2030.

In a statement, the organization said, "This move is in line with the ICC’s strategy to prioritize the women’s game and accelerate its growth by 2032." Now, teams who win a game and finish in the same position at similar events will be paid the same amount of money.  The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 event prize money is slightly larger due to 10 more teams competing and 32 more matches played."

The winner of each game in the group stages will receive USD 31,154. The teams who place third or fourth in their group will each receive USD 270,000, while the teams that finish fifth will receive USD 135,000.

Meanwhile, the ICC has also announced a minor tweak in the schedule for the October 5 double-header in Sharjah with Australia now facing Sri Lanka in the afternoon game and Bangladesh vs England now scheduled in the evening slot.
