How BCCI supported Bangladesh to obtain Test status in 2000: IND vs. BAN

Bangladesh views a Test series against India as a return to the days when the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) was pushing for Bangladesh to be granted The International Cricket Council's (ICC) standing regarding tests.

When Bangladesh played in the 1999 ODI World Cup for the first time in the competition's history, things got started.

At the tournament, the debutants defeated Scotland to register their first-ever win and even registered an enormous upset by besting one of the favourites, Pakistan by 62 runs.

It was a motivating factor, but Jagmohan Dalmiya, the then-ICC leader and former president of the BCCI, gave it the major push in 2000 when he made Bangladesh the tenth nation to be granted Test-playing status through a unanimous vote.

Then, on November 10, 2000, Bangladesh played its first Test match at Dhakar, India, captained by Naimur Rahman. India, led by Sourav Ganguly, will defeat the hosts by a commanding nine wickets.

However, Animal Islam went on to become the first Bangladeshi to score a ton in the longest format of the game – a resilient 145 runs off 380 *****.

An emotional hug

Islam would describe in an interview with The Daily Star the intense feelings that overcame him upon learning that Bangladesh had been granted Test status.

"I remember getting the update on the test status that day.Islam answered, "I played for a club in England once."

"At eleven or twelve, I think I was standing outside the Lord's meeting room. (Mohammad) Ashraful bhai, with teary eyes, came to me and hugged me as he said, ‘Bulbul, we were unanimously voted for the Test status. We understand."We three joyfully celebrated after Saber bhai joined us," he continued.

Long wait for the first triumph

Following their first Test against India, Bangladesh went on to lose 15 Test series – losing 28 of the 31 Tests they played during the same.

Five years after they played their first Test match, which was a two-match series against Zimbabwe in 2005, they won their first match and series. They would have to wait an additional four years for their next series victory, which came against the West Indies and was their first series victory away from home.

As of 2024, Bangladesh has won only eight Test series. Bangladesh has played 14 Test matches against India and has failed to record a victory, having drawn once and lost 13 of them.
